Risk Of Rain 2 Tier List: Mastering the Elements

Risk Of Rain 2 Tier List

The roguelike third-person game continues to captivate the gaming community even years after its release. With Gearbox acquiring Hopoo Games, concerns among fans about the game’s future were alleviated by the announcement of a new DLC expansion titled Seekers of the Storm, following Survivors of the Void.

Despite numerous updates and content additions, players must discover which Survivor is most ‘overpowered.’ Each playable Survivor in Risk of Rain 2 demonstrates considerable strength with the right items and skilled player. However, certain Survivors maintain higher pay rates for reasons beyond mere coincidence or skin modifications.

Artificer

Among all the characters in Risk of Rain 2, Artificer holds the lowest playrate, primarily due to a peculiar reason. Artificer requires players to hover constantly and master airborne survival, setting her apart with a distinct playstyle akin to the game’s ‘Mage’ class.

However, investing a few hours into mastering Artificer’s gameplay reveals her considerable strength. She boasts top-tier single-target damage tools, the ability to control with her Ice Wall, exceptional maneuverability via Ion Surge, and immunity to fall damage.

Achieving ‘overpowered’ status with Artificer requires extensive practice and acquiring specific items, contributing to her lower ranking among Survivors.

Commando

The default character in Risk of Rain 2, Commando, is akin to ‘Mario’ due to his straightforward mechanics, ideal for beginners.

Despite being the starting Survivor, many players overlook Commando because they feel obligated to play him initially. Consequently, some players quickly switch to other Survivors and rarely return to Commando.

Yet, this overlooks that Commando can demonstrate the extreme potential of item scaling when equipped strategically. Initially, his damage output may seem minimal, akin to a mere scratch against foes.

However, as Commando accumulates on-hit items, his effectiveness exponentially increases, showcasing his ability to become exceptionally powerful over time.

REX

Given the effort required to unlock REX, one might anticipate it to rank higher among Survivors. However, despite its significant damage potential, crowd control capabilities, and unique abilities, REX carries a considerable risk compared to its rewards.

Many of REX’s abilities consume its health as a resource, necessitating constant vigilance over health levels. Learning to master REX can be frustrating, especially when vulnerable to unexpected attacks from creatures like Pests or Wisps.

Moreover, due to its frequent use of health as a resource, REX rarely benefits from the ‘one-shot’ protection that shields Survivors from instant kills by enemies.

This limitation is unfortunate, given REX’s uniqueness. With a suitable build and playstyle, REX can unleash higher damage output than many other Survivors. However, achieving this consistently remains statistically unlikely.

Railgunner

To be frank, every Survivor in the game holds potential for greatness, and there are no ‘bad’ Survivors. However, the two added in the Survivors of the Void DLC stand notably stronger by default.

Take Railgunner, for instance—her base stats may seem average initially, but once players utilize her in-game abilities, they quickly realize how deceptive these stats can be.

With precise aiming and effective use of her active reload system, Railgunner can enter the first stage on any difficulty, activate the Teleporter with no items, and defeat the boss in under 2 minutes.

Railgunner incorporates a guaranteed Crit system akin to Bandit, possesses freezing capabilities like Artificer for executing enemies, and moves effortlessly across the map using Concussion Devices similar to Acrid or the Mercenary.

This character boasts a comprehensive set of abilities, including un-scoped homing shots and the innate ability to convert Crit Chance into Crit Damage.

Mercenary

Despite the peril of facing enemies in challenging modes like Monsoon, the melee-focused Mercenary proves surprisingly effective.

Notably, Mercenary stands out as the most agile Survivor from the outset of a run, boasting default double-jumping and multiple dashes that facilitate effortless navigation across the map, reducing dependence on movement speed items.

Moreover, the Mercenary excels in dealing substantial damage, especially with his Expose debuff, and benefits from ample iFrames to evade attacks effectively.

His default Special, Eviscerate, grants brief immunity for approximately two seconds per cast. Even when using his alternate Special, Slicing Winds, players can rely on iFrames from abilities like Focused Assault or Blinding Assault to navigate challenging encounters.

However, playing as a melee class inherently carries more risk, despite enhancements from new items like Safer Spaces introduced in Survivors of the Void, which have made melee Survivors more viable overall.

Void Fiend

Now, consider discussing the most powerful Survivor in Risk of Rain 2, the Void Fiend, a recent addition. Unlocking this character can be challenging due to the difficulty of facing Voidlings and the tediousness of the Simulacrum process.

However, the effort pays off, as the Void Fiend proves exceptionally potent. The Void Fiend is a formidable choice with strong maneuverability, impressive burst damage, innate healing, homing shots, and a transformation into a formidable close-range combatant.

Unlike the Railgunner, who improves upon existing Survivor abilities slightly, the Void Fiend elevates gameplay to a new standard. Although managing the Void Corruption meter initially poses challenges, players enjoy unparalleled freedom in playstyle and build choices once they adapt.

As a result, navigating runs with the Void Fiend typically proves smooth and trouble-free, regardless of chosen strategies or configurations.

The Heretic

You haven’t overlooked unlocking a character if you don’t see the Heretic on the character select screen. The Heretic is a hidden playable character in Risk of Rain 2, akin to Risk of Rain’s Robomando, accessible only under particular conditions for a single run.

Players can control her once they collect all four Lunar items named ‘Heresy,’ replacing their abilities with new ones, instantly transforming them into the Heretic.
